Tracing the exact location of a number is a privacy issue in India.You can have it only in case an FIR is launched for a criminal/similar offences or diplomatic purpose. Mobile subscribers disclose the details only to the "Authorized" authorities in India.

It is only a directory service which works on predefined Geo locations for mobile numbers. Tracing the actual location is not legal and ethical, also that is a privacy issue, and Telephone operators like Tata, Reliance etc. don't release this kind of information to the public.
Many people want to know the location of a person holding a mobile. That is possible through Google friends sharing and few other GPS softwares built using ARCGIS location detection API but its a high breach of privacy and totally unethical.So please do not bring up such requests.

Exact location of the person can be traced in two ways : 1) Google latitude - the person needs to be friends with you in that case.
2)Via spying on him - you can install any spy application (lots of them available on google) on your friend's mobile which is in hidden mode. (most spy apps support hidden mode). It will keep posting the location to your email after certain intervals when the person changes the nearest mobile tower.
However, since this is not ethically correct, i would suggest you to not do it.

I have repeatedly said that tracing and spying are two different things. Tracing the route of a mobile means to trace the network service provider. Tracing exact location is also possible through internet by various handshaking "trusted" modes like Google latitude,facebook checkin and lot of other mobile apps. However, if you are looking for spying application - please use android playstore there are number of applications available which can sms/mail you the exact location of your friends/spouse etc.

@Bhaskar: You can track your cell number by making an FIR and a followup complaint to your service provider(vodafone,airtel etc) to track the the location of your phone via IMEA number. A police FIR may be helpful, if authorities are serious you can recover your phone.
TrueCaller - Helps to find the name and location of person. Download it from Applestore or Android store.It is available for both IOS and Android phones.

Phones without Global Positioning System (GPS) can find your location by monitoring the signal as the phone moves from one cell tower to the next. Your mobile phone provider's computers can do this by measuring your angle to the cell towers, the time it takes your signal to reach each tower, and the signal strength at each tower. Because environmental factors such as trees and buildings can affect these measurements, this method is much less accurate than GPS.
I am aware of the following methods :
•plain GPS
•Assisted-GPS
•Cellular triangulation / multilateration
•Cell (tower) identification (FCC/etc. cellular tower database lookup)
•Enhanced Cell Identification (E-911)
•Uplink-Time difference of arrival (U-TDOA)
•Time-of-Arrival (TOA)
•Angle of Arrival (AOA)
•E-OTD (Enhanced-Observed Time Difference)
•and/or a hybrid of these technologies and approaches.

@Anonymous: for PRANK CALLS : If you have an android enabled mobile or an iPhone with internet connection, then install "True Caller" from android or apple store. It will trace back the identity of the person who called you up.
